Bizhiki: Unbound is the creation of Dylan Bizhikiins Jennings, Joe Rainey Sr., and S. Carey (of Bon Iver fame). Together, they have crafted a sound that is both a celebration of Ojibwe cultural heritage and a bold exploration of new musical frontiers. Their latest album, Unbound, released on July 19 via Jagjaguwar, sets the stage with a single, trembling chord that unfolds into a blend of voices from the past and rhythms of the present.

The lead single, “Gigawaabamin (Come Through),” features Mike Sullivan and includes contributions from Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and Stephen Garrington (Low). This track, and the album as a whole, offers a soulful dialogue between traditional powwow singing, electronic voice modulation, hand drumming, and contemporary beats, creating a harmonious blend of sound that honors Midwest musical history while forging new paths.

The origins of Bizhiki can be traced back to the Eaux Claires festival, held on the ancestral lands of the Ojibwe. Invited to perform without constraints or expectations, the group embraced a spirit of open collaboration, allowing their music to resonate deeply and evolve organically.

Recognized for its cultural importance, Bizhiki: Unbound received an inaugural Wisconsin Special Projects Grant from the Ruth Foundation for the Arts. This initiative seeks to engage diverse audiences across Wisconsin, bridging cultural divides and fostering mutual understanding through music. The Stoughton Opera House performance is part of a larger effort to revitalize traditional practices within Tribal communities and enhance awareness in non-Tribal communities.

Join us for an unforgettable evening of music and dance that transcends boundaries and celebrates the resilience and creativity of the Ojibwe people.
